The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is delighted to announce that the 2020 edition of the Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration will be delivered virtually over a 4 week period, from 4 - 27 September 2020. Distinguished arbitrator Professor Dr Mohamed Abdel Wahab MCIArb will be returning to direct this year’s Diploma.
Normally delivered in the heart of Oxford for more than twenty years, it provides practising lawyers and other professionals who are familiar with legal reasoning and are involved in arbitration (domestic or international) the opportunity to undertake training and assessments that may make them eligible for peer interview for Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). The Diploma is delivered by highly experienced and distinguished tutors and involves a combination of lectures, seminars and interactive sessions.
However, this year, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision has been taken to deliver 2020’s Diploma virtually. CIArb will use online platforms to provide candidates with all the necessary training materials and virtual classroom experience. Candidates can also take the assessments at home and submit them using CIArb’s assessment portals. The programme format has been adapted for virtual delivery and the Diploma will now be held over 4 weeks as opposed to 9 days.
Professor Dr Abdel Wahab is recognised as a world-leader in dispute resolution and is an arbitrator and arbitration practitioner with considerable expertise and experience in international investment and international commercial arbitration, Islamic Sharīah, construction, oil & gas, telecommunications, finance and online dispute resolution. He is Chair of the Private International Law Department and Professor of International Arbitration at Cairo University and the Founding Partner and Head of International Arbitration, Construction and Oil & Gas at Zulficar & Partners Law Firm. He is Vice President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and Member of the ICCA Governing Board, and holds a number of other prominent positions.

Joint intervention success as Churchill judgment allows the courts to order parties to mediateIn a significant moment for mediation, the highly anticipated Churchill judgment overturns the decision in Halsey, confirming it is not a breach of human rights to integrate mediation into the court process and, where appropriate, to order parties to mediate. CMC, Ciarb and CEDR joined forces to intervene in the case, arguing strongly for this outcome.
