Dr. Pie Habimana is a Rwandan business law senior lecturer, arbitrator, corporate and commercial transactions lawyer with 15+ years of experience. He is pragmatic, independent and critical thinker. He has been consulted by various institutions such as the World Bank, the UNECA, the UNESCO, and the RGB (Rw). He specialises in international tax law and has expertise in tax, arbitration, corporate and commercial transactions, corporate governance and compliance.
He was called to the Bar in 2011 and is a Partner in Amilex Chambers, a boutique business law firm he founded in 2017. He is on the Board of Multisector Investment Group Plc; Rwanda Bar Association; and a Disciplinary Commissioner of ICPAR. In the past, he served as the Vice-President of the East Africa Law Society and on the Board of Cogebanque Plc, and Printer Set Ltd. He is on the panel of arbitrators and adjudicators of the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC), a member of the Rwanda Bar Association (RBA), a member (MCIArb) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators UK, the African Arbitration Association (AfAA), the International Bar Association (IBA), the African Business Integrity Network (ABIN), and SOAS Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Centre (SADRC). Dr. Pie has been engaged in a dozen of domestic and international arbitration and adjudication cases as arbitrator, counsel or expert witness.
In academia, Dr. Pie is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean of the School of Law, University of Rwanda. He teaches tax law, corporate taxation, international trade law, commercial arbitration, and commercial transactions, and has guest-lectured at various universities and institutions of higher learning.
He holds a PhD in International Tax Law from the prestigious Leiden Law School of Leiden University, an LLM (cum laude) in Business Law and an LLB (cum laude) from the University of Rwanda, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice and several postgraduate certificates from Kenya, Benin, Nigeria, Uganda, and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK). He is the author of two books and a dozen of scholarly peer-reviewed research papers published in world-reputed scientific journals. Dr. Pie is nationally recognized as a champion of tax law scholarship and is the only Rwandan with a PhD in the field of tax law. His dissertation was published by the renowned International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD), based in Amsterdam, earning him credits to be the first sub-Saharan African to publish in the IBFD doctoral series. The book costs $140 VAT exclusive. He is fluent in English, French, and Kinyarwanda (native).
