Sanctions in International Arbitration: Challenges, yes, but also opportunities?
Join Ciarb's European Branch for this 2 day conference in Copenhagen, taking place on 19 & 20 April.
Today’s suddenly tumultuous geopolitical world has spawned an unprecedentedly vast and varied array of economic sanctions. The incidence of sanctions seeking to interfere with international commercial relations has mounted markedly, and the ways sanctions seek to affect them have multiplied.
The claims of international commerce decided usually in international arbitration are therefore increasingly subjected to the intrusion of sanctions. Whilst this Spannungsfeld engenders challenges for international arbitration, the unique circumstances of arbitration may offer vistas for international commerce better to contend with sanctions and influence their impact. This conference will investigate the complex problem of the application of sanctions, and identify and assess their impact on the various actors in international arbitration - arbitration institutions, arbitrators, and the parties - across the stages of agreeing to arbitrate, the arbitration proceeding, and the enforcement of arbitral awards.
