Personal bio

Magdalena Łągiewska is an Assistant Professor at the University of Gdańsk (Department of Public International Law), a Research Associate in the "China, Law and Development" project at the University of Oxford, the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Gdańsk (2020-2024), a Dean's Plenipotentiary for Cooperation with China and an Asia Global Fellow 2024 at the University of Hong Kong. She received Ph.D. in Law from the University of Gdańsk in 2017 and her second Ph.D. in Law from the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai in 2020 (Ph.D. thesis entitled "The Effectiveness of the Arbitration Agreement under Chinese and Polish Law: A Comparative Study" in Chinese). In addition to her legal education, she holds a Master's degree in International Economic Relations with a specialisation in International Finance and Banking (University of Gdańsk). She gained practical experience in international commercial arbitration through her internship at the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (SHIAC). Her research interests include international law, arbitration in China, intellectual property rights protection and the legal dimensions of the Belt and Road Initiative. Her book “Digitalization and the Use of New Technologies in International Arbitration” has been published by Brill in 2024.
