Matt Lee is a Principal at Burford Capital with responsibility for leading its investment activity and operations in Australia and focused on working with companies, funds, investors and law firms engaged in complex commercial litigation and arbitration in Australia and abroad. As Australian and US-qualified lawyer with trial, arbitration, and appellate experience across Australia, the US, UK, Europe, and Southeast Asia, Matt often works with institutions and law firms assessing multi-jurisdictional disputes. Prior to joining Burford, Matt was a senior lawyer in New York at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, where he focused on representing clients in complex commercial litigation, transnational disputes, international arbitration, class actions, appeals and investigations. Matt has taught various law courses in both Australia and the US, including transnational dispute resolution at New York University. He began his legal career working on litigation, advising and appellate matters with the South Australian Crown Solicitor and Solicitor General. Matt earned Honors degrees in Law and Arts (Politics) both with First Class Honors from the University of Adelaide and graduated from Harvard Law School after receiving the Fulbright (W.G. Walker) Scholarship and the Law Foundation of South Australia Fellowship.
