Dr Franz Stirnimann Fuentes focuses his practice on international arbitration and litigation as well as international judicial assistance.
Dr Franz Stirnimann has acted as counsel and arbitrator in over 90 international arbitrations (ICC, ICSID, Swiss Rules, CAM, SCC, DIS, LCIA, UNCITRAL and ad hoc) governed by various procedural and substantive laws. He is known for his arbitrator work in Latin-America and Spain and also for being a Swiss lawyer with common law training. He also regularly acts as counsel in before Swiss courts, including the Swiss Supreme Court and as a commisioner under the Hague Convention.
Dr Franz Stirnimann is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and is listed in the panel of arbitrators of leading institutions in Europe, Latin-America and Asia. He has been appointed by Switzerland to the ICSID Panel of Conciliators.
He is ranked by Chambers Global, Chambers Europe, Who’s Who Legal, Best Lawyers, Leader's League and Expert Guides for arbitration and dispute resolution.
Dr Franz Stirnimann specialises in disputes relating to international joint ventures, shareholders, licensing/IP, sales and investment disputes in the energy, mining, telecommunications, construction, infrastructure and finance sector.
He is of Swiss and Latin-American origin, and fluent in English, German, Spanish and French. He is both civil and common law trained and admitted to practice in Geneva, England and Wales, and New York. He holds a PhD from the University of Zurich, an LLM from Georgetown University and a JD from the Universities of Fribourg and Durham. He speaks and publishes regularly on arbitration-related topics and has been a lecturer teaching arbitration at universities in Switzerland and Latin-America.
