Personal bio
Rana Sajjad is a dual-qualified lawyer, licensed in New York and as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He has over 20 years’ experience in Pakistan and the U.S. in the areas of contracts, cross-border transactions, commercial litigation and domestic and international arbitration. In addition to acting as co-counsel in international arbitration proceedings administered by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Dubai International Financial Centre-London Court of International Arbitration (DIFC- LCIA) and the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), he has represented clients in proceedings involving enforcement of arbitration agreements and foreign arbitral awards, He also advises clients in the energy, technology, telecom, manufacturing and construction sectors and represents them before courts and arbitral tribunals in matters involving contractual, commercial and investment disputes.
Sajjad is also appointed as a Pakistan law expert in connection with arbitration proceedings.
Sajjad was a member of a Working Group constituted by the Government of Pakistan to provide recommendations for reforming Pakistan's International Investment Agreement (IIA) regime.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and was the first lawyer based in Pakistan to become a member of CIArb’s Approved Faculty List (AFL) as a tutor for international arbitration law, practice and procedure. He is also the only lawyer in Pakistan who, in addition to being a Fellow of CIArb, is an accredited mediator of the Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI).
Sajjad has taught international arbitration to LL.M. students and conducted workshops on international arbitration at universities, the Lahore High Court, Pakistan Engineering Council and the Punjab Judicial Academy.
Before starting his practice in Pakistan, Sajjad worked in the U.S. for leading large law firms including Fulbright & Jaworski (now Norton Rose Fulbright) in practice areas including international arbitration.
Sajjad has spoken at conferences in China, Malaysia and the U.S. His articles on international arbitration have been published in Pakistan's leading newspapers and the International Journal of Arab Arbitration (IJAA). He also authored the Pakistan chapter of the book titled “Force Majeure and Hardship in the Asia-Pacific Region” published by Juris, a leading publisher of international law books.
