Dr. Jur. Théophile Margellos, MCIArb, President of the EUIPO Boards of Appeal Dr. Jur. Théophile M. Margellos was appointed by the European Union Council of Ministers as President of the European Union Intellectual Property Boards of Appeal in 2013 (Alicante, Spain). He previously served as a Chairperson as well as a Member of the 1st and 3rd EUIPO Boards of Appeal, alternate Chairperson of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA – Köln, Germany) Board of Appeal and qualified Member of the Boards of Appeal of the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO – Angers, France). Dr. Margellos is an accredited Mediator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and the Centre of Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR). In his capacity as President of the EUIPO Boards of Appeal, he has created and managed a specialized Alternative Dispute Resolution Service to mediate in the intellectual property field. He studied law at the Universities of Athens (GR), Strasbourg (FR) and Freiburg i. Br. (DE) and political sciences at Athens University and the Institute for Post-Graduate European Studies (IHEE) in Strasbourg. He has successively worked as an attorney-at-law specialising in IP , as a référendaire at the EU Court of Justice (Luxembourg) and has been a member of the Legal service of the European Commission and European Patent Attorney. He has served as member of the Administrative Council and the executive Board of the European Patent Institute (EP), member of the Standing Advisory Committee before the European Patent Office (SACEPO) and member of the CIArb European Branch Committee. Dr Margellos has also been a professor of law at the Jules Verne University in Amiens, France. He has been recently nominated Hon. Professor of the Commercial Law Department of the University of Alicante, Spain. He has published and lectured extensively on trade mark and international commercial law matters, European law, private international law, civil and commercial law, arbitration and mediation. He recently co-edited the book “Mediation: Creating Value in International Intellectual Property Disputes” published by Wolters Kluwer.
