Personal bio

Peterson Mwesiga is a Partner at Meritas Advocates where he heads the Energy, Mining & Infrastructure Practice of the Firm. He is an Advocate of all Courts of Judicature as well as a qualified Electrical Engineer with nearly 15 years in practice. Prior to joining the Firm, he was a Partner at Aequitas Advocates. He is well versed with the regulatory and licensing framework of the Energy, Mining and Construction sector in Uganda. His expertise includes advisory on Investment Law; Energy and Power Infrastructure Projects; Power Purchase Agreement negotiations; Building, Construction and general Engineering Law; Project Finance; Public Private Partnerships (PPP); Mining transactions; Oil and Gas; Innovation and Intellectual Property; Information Technology and Telecommunications; Cyber and Space law; Property and conveyancing; and Arbitration. He holds a Bachelor of Laws, LL.B (1st Class Honours – Makerere University); and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice of the Law Development Centre (LDC) where he was the recipient of the prestigious Chief Justice Award. He also holds a BSc. Electrical Engineering (1st Class Honours – Makerere University) and MSc. Electrical Engineering (with distinction – Makerere University /University of Pretoria). He has also received several specialist trainings in his practice areas from several institutions of international repute including the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) Academy hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group. Peterson, a recipient of several excellence awards has been widely consulted and has advised several national, regional and international bodies. He was a Legal Consultant on the Commission of Inquiry into the Effectiveness of Laws, Policies and Processes of Land Acquisition, Land Administration, Land Management and Land Registration in Uganda chaired by the Hon. Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemereire. He formerly served as a member of Council of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) and is currently a member on a number of Boards of companies and a legal adviser to several corporate and institutional clients. He is a member of the Uganda Law Society (ULS), Uganda Christian Lawyers Fraternity (UCLF), East African Law Society (EALS), Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE), Association of Christian Technologists and Engineers (ACTE), Africa Engineering Education Association (AEEA) and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE). He is also a member of the African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE) which seeks to evangelise the cities of Africa through mission in Word and Deed in partnership with the Church. Peterson is a graduate of the Oakseed Executive Leadership Course (OSELC) of the Institute for National Transformation, and a Technology Enthusiast and Futurist with a keen interest in the future of technology regulation.
