Personal bio

Mauricio Salas, MCIArb is a partner of BLP Abogados, the largest law firm in Costa Rica. He is currently the firm´s head of litigation and arbitration. His B.A. and J.D. degrees are from the University of Costa Rica, and his LL.M. in international trade was obtained at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Mr. Salas has served as an associate professor of International Trade, Trade Remedies, and International Law at the University of Costa Rica. He also worked as researcher for the late Professor John H. Jackson, at the Georgetown University Law Center. He is currently an associate professor of dispute settlement in international trade at Lead University. In 2011, he received the Rodolfo Piza Award from the Costa Rican Association of International Law for his contribution to the teaching of international law in Costa Rica. During 1999, Mr. Salas interned at the Appellate Body Secretariat of the World Trade Organization in Geneva. He is listed in the roster of arbitrators of the CAFTA free trade agreement with the United States, and in the Costa Rica-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, as well as the Iberoamerican Arbitration Center among other international fora. He currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors of the AMCHAM International Arbitration Center in Costa Rica, and as comptroller of the Asociación Costa Rica por Siempre environmental fund. The International Financial Law Review, WWL, LACCA, Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, Benchmark Litigation, Leaders League and Latin Lawyer consider him to be one of the leading lawyers in Costa Rica in the fields of dispute resolution, trade and environmental law.
