Anish WADIA, C.Arb, FCIArb (Arb. & Med.), CIP(FAIADR), FACICA, FMIArb, FSIArb, FPIArb, FPD, FICA, LL.B. B.Com., is an experienced, internationally accredited, full-time independent Chartered Arbitrator, Accredited Mediator (IMI Certified; CEDR Accredited; MCPC Accredited; and Professional Mediator FIS-FRDO) and Adjudicator: with experience acting as such in common and civil law jurisdictions, as well as in Russia, Hong Kong and under the Laws of China, under U.A.E. laws; and also with an understanding of Islamic laws. Anish serves as a Ciarb U.K. Approved Faculty List (AFL) Course Director, Assessor & Tutor in International Arbitration, Domestic Arbitration, Mediation and Construction Adjudication Pathway Courses as well as an International Faculty for Ciarb’s flagship Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration (i.e. the virtual and in-person edition at Oxford University, U.K.).
He is also a qualified Lawyer with full rights of audience before Courts in India as an ‘Advocate’; England & Wales as a ‘Solicitor Advocate’ (Civil); and Kazakhstan as a ‘Lawyer (AIFC Courts)’. He is also an accredited Sports Arbitrator (AIAC and the Olympic Council of Malaysia).
Anish holds the distinction of being the youngest ever individual and the first Indian qualified lawyer in the world to be accredited as a Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb) in CIArb’s over 100+ year history, since being established in 1915. As on date, he is the only Indian Chartered Arbitrator in the world.
Anish has received numerous other accolades in the field of International ADR including being voted as one of the youngest Top 10 Arbitrators in Asia Pacific and receiving the ‘Outstanding Global Achievement in International Arbitration’ Award in 2019. In 2020 he received the ‘Dispute Resolution Award of the Year (Global)’ and in 2021 the ‘Dispute Resolution Award of the Year (Asia)’, both in the United Kingdom. Anish is also ranked by inter alia the prestigious Who’s Who Legal: Future Leaders (Partners) in Arbitration for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 as “one of the most recommended arbitrators” who “is precise and diligent, very considerate on the impartiality and due process” and whose “experience includes acting under the ICC Rules in disputes involving parties spanning across EMEA and APAC” as well as being recognised for “his practical and quick approach to render Awards is well known and admired among peers”.
Admitted on the Panel of Arbitrators & Mediators of over 60 ADR Institutions across the globe spanning every continent including by the European Union (EU)’s Commission as one of only 64 individuals in the world suitable for appointment as a Chairperson for Arbitrations in bilateral disputes under the EU’s trade agreements with third countries. Regularly appointed as Chair/Presiding Arbitrator, Sole Arbitrator, Wing/Co-Arbitrator and Mediator including under the ICC (incl. Expedited Provisions), LCIA, DIAC, KIAC (Rwanda-Africa) and ICAC (MKAC-Russia) Institutional Rules, [English] Arbitration Act 1996, [Indian] Arbitration & Conciliation Act 1996 and ad-hoc arbitrations with knowledge/understanding across a broad spectrum of agriculture, aviation, banking/financial/insurance, commercial, commodities, competition, construction, corporate, employment/labour, energy/power, EPC, gaming/sports, hospitality/travel/ tourism, maritime, mining, oil & gas, property, telecom, transport, etc. disputes.
At present, inter alia Anish serves as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, U.K.’s Regional Pathway Leader (RPL) for India & Middle East; Board Member: Asian European Arbitration Association, Germany (AEAA); Governing Council: Hyderabad Arbitration Centre, India (HAC); Ethics Commission and Disciplinary Committee: International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, Switzerland (IMMAF). Anish previously served on inter alia the ICC Commission on Arbitration & ADR (Paris, France - India delegate); ICC Afghanistan Commission on Arbitration & ADR (Kabul, Afghanistan); the ICC India Executive Committee; as a Council Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (HKIArb), and as a Council Member of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators (MIArb - including as Chair of the Arbitrator Panel Selection Committee and the Training & Professional Development Committee) and as Council (Dispute Resolution Section): American Bar Association. Prior to their dissolution in February 2023 (as part of CIArb’s global organisational restructuring), Anish served on the on Ciarb’s global Examination Board (EB) and Practice & Standards Committee (PSC).
Anish is regularly invited as a Lecturer/Speaker/Trainer on International Arbitration and Mediation including for the Judiciary: The Bahamas (including Justices of the Hon’ble Supreme Court led by the then Chief Justice of The Bahamas; organised by BJEI jointly with ICSID, PCA, UNCITRAL and ICCA) (August 2020), Cameroon (April/May 2022) and Pakistan (September/October 2022).
