Personal bio

Paul Tichauer is an international commercial arbitrator focusing on disputes in the extractive metallurgy, materials, manufacturing, engineering and technology sectors. He was the Founding Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ Canada Branch in 2017 and a board member until 2023. In 2022 Dr. Tichauer received the CIArb Canada Award for Distinguished Service in Canadian Arbitration. For more details please see my website: www.ceoarbitration.com Paul is Vice President of the Standing Committee of the ICC International Center for ADR in Paris where he has been a member since 2016. This committee assists the Centre in the appointment of Experts, Neutrals and Dispute Boards as well as its administration of Expert Proceedings and the scrutiny of Expert Reports. Paul is also Founding Co-Chair of CanArbWeek, an annual event since 2020 that fosters the practice of arbitration in Canada by bringing together organizations and firms who are active users and practitioner of arbitration. In 2018, Paul was designated as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ representative at UNCITRAL Working Group lll on Investor-State Dispute Settlement reform. In 2019, he was appointed by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as the sole Branch Chair on its Governance Review Working Party. Dr. Tichauer was also a member of the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society’s Working Group on the reform of domestic arbitration legislation for the Province of Ontario. He has served as a tutor at the CIArb’s Accelerated Route to Fellowship course, as an arbitrator at the Vis Moot in Vienna and as a Judge at the ICC International Mediation Competition in Paris since 2015. Paul’s recent arbitral appointments include serving as an ICC-appointed Sole Arbitrator of a multi-party, international dispute concerning the failure of an aircraft jet engine, as Sole Arbitrator for ICDR Canada and as a Public Arbitrator for FINRA – the Financial Regulatory Authority in the USA. A Rhodes Scholar, Paul received a BEng (Metallurgy) from McGill University, an MA (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) from Oxford University and a PhD (Metallurgy) from MIT. He also holds an MBA (Finance) with Distinction from Pace University in New York. In 2013 Dr. Tichauer Completed the CIArb Diploma Program in International Commercial Arbitration. .
