john J.Buckley. Jr. is an independent arbitrator specializing in complex commercial and investor-state disputes. He has acted either as arbitrator or lead counsel in a wide range of international and domestic disputes under the laws of many common law and civil law countries and under public international law. He served as chair, co-arbitrator, or sole arbitrator in high-value cases under various institutional rules and in ad hoc arbitrations. He was a partner with Williams & Connolly LLP for more than 40 years and founded and headed the firm’s International Arbitration Practice Group. He is presently a senior counsel at the firm. He conducts his arbitrator practice, BuckleyARB, independently from the firm. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the College of Commercial Arbitrators, and American College of Trial Attorneys, and an elected member of the American Law Institute. He is a member of the Arbitration Committee of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) and the CPR Council, and a member of the Arbitration Committee of the United States Council for International Business/International Chamber of Commerce (USCIB/ICC), He is listed on the arbitrator rosters of the American Arbitration Association (including its Large and Complex Case Panel and National Energy Panel), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), CPR’s Panel of Distinguished Neutrals, including various specialty panels. He has been a faculty-appointed lecturer on international arbitration at Yale Law School teaching a weekly seminar. His arbitration cases have included energy, oil & gas, telecommunications, intellectual property, biotechnology, U.S. and foreign investments, joint ventures, and shareholder disputes. He is admitted to practice in the State of New York and the District of Columbia. He earned his J.D, cum laude, Order of the Coif, from the University of Chicago Law School and was Editor-in-Chief of the University of Chicago Law Review. He earned his B.A, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Georgetown University. He was law clerk to Judge John Minor Wisdom, United States Court of Appeals for Fifth Circuit, 1972-73, and to Justice Lewis f. Powell, Jr,, Supreme Court of the United States, 1973-74. He was Special Assistant to Hon. Edward H. Levi, Attorney General of the United States, U.S. Department of Justice, 1975-77.
