Ready to take your skills as an arbitrator to the next level? Join Ciarb for the third edition of our online series: The Learning Lab: Arbitrator Skills Development.  This six-part series of workshops has been designed to develop your arbitration management skills and equip you with the knowledge and confidence required to robustly handle every stage of arbitral proceedings.  

 

In every workshop in the Learning Lab series, you'll gain insights from leading professionals before applying your new knowledge and developing your practical skills in a small group session led by an experienced dispute resolution expert. This series is suitable for both seasoned arbitrators and arbitration practitioners who plan to start sitting as arbitrators in the future.   

 

After completing the workshops, you will be able to:

8 May – First Impressions: Personal Branding and Terms of Appointment

Our first workshop will help you to develop the essential skills required to prepare comprehensive Terms of Appointment to govern your appointment as arbitrator. You will also learn some tips and tricks to help you build a successful practice as an arbitrator, including the role of personal branding.

15 May – The Ethical Arbitrator: Conflict Conundrums and Tricky Challenges

Are you keen to avoid potential conflicts of interest and respond robustly to arbitrator challenges? Our second workshop will explore the ethical jungle of international arbitration, equipping you with the skills required to manage potential conflicts of interest and respond to tricky challenges, whether serving as presiding arbitrator, party-appointed arbitrator, or sole arbitrator.

22 May – Show and Tell: Making Robust Disclosures and Handling Arbitrator Interviews

What should an arbitrator disclose to parties, and when may arbitrator interviews be inappropriate? Our third workshop will explore what an arbitrator should and should not share with parties, enabling you to make robust disclosures to parties and recognise when to agree to be interviewed before appointment, and when it may not be appropriate.

29 May – Starting Strong: Case and Time Management Tips for Arbitrators

Are you keen to hone your case management skills and learn how to manage arbitral proceedings robustly? Our fourth workshop will focus on tribunal dynamics and equip you with the case and time management skills required to prepare comprehensive procedural orders and handle procedural developments with grace.

5 June – The Show Must Go On: Managing Document Production, Evidence and Hearings

Are you keen to manage document production more efficiently and refine your evidence and hearing management skills? Our fifth workshop will give you the opportunity to put your evidence management skills to the test as you navigate a series of tricky document production and cross-examination scenarios.

12 June – The Active Arbitrator: Combatting Guerrilla Tactics and Adopting Proactive Case Management Practices

Are you prepared to protect the integrity of the arbitral process in the face of guerrilla tactics? How proactive can you be as arbitrator? Rounding out the series, our final workshop will equip you with the skills required to differentiate between zealous advocacy and guerrilla tactics and how to handle problematic party conduct. You will also explore opportunities proactive case management practices, including when it is appropriate to encourage settlement.

This series will be hosted as six separate workshops on consecutive Thursdays from 8 May to 12 June, between 13:00-14:30 GMT+1.

Co-tutors

Amanda J. Lee FCIArb, a Consultant at Costigan King, sits as an arbitrator in international and domestic arbitration proceedings. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Law, UK. Amanda is a member of ArbitralWomen’s Advisory Council, the Advisory Board of INIAC, and the Peer Review Board of the American Review of International Arbitration, amongst other appointments. She is the founder of Careers in Arbitration and ARBalance. 

 

 

Mercy McBrayer FCIArb is Ciarb’s Head of Arbitration Professional Practice. Mercy is a United States qualified attorney and certified mediator with experience as party counsel in commercial business litigation and arbitration. She is an assistant editor of the Ciarb Journal, a Teaching Fellow in international arbitration at QMUL, and moot coach.
