Overview

The Roebuck Lecture will be delivered by Sir Robin Knowles CBE.

The Roebuck Lecture will be delivered in-person at Ciarb Headquarters in London and streamed live for our global audience.

Cristen Bauer, Head of Policy at Ciarb, said, "We are delighted to announce Sir Robin Knowles CBE as our distinguished speaker for the 2025 Roebuck Lecture, who will share his insights on damages in arbitration. Sir Robin sits in the High Court, the Commercial Court, the Administrative Court, and the Court of Appeal Criminal Division, and has played a significant role in shaping arbitration law and promoting the development of arbitration globally. He has presided over several important cases influencing the practice of arbitration, perhaps most notably in P&ID v Nigeria ([2023] EWHC 2638 (Comm)), which has been at the heart of discussions on corruption and damages in both international and national forums. He is a qualified mediator, has sat as an arbitrator and has day-to-day responsibility for the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts, which brings together courts from across the world to discuss and share best practices in international commercial disputes.

"Ciarb's Roebuck Lectures provide a platform for leading voices in alternative dispute resolution to share their research, discuss pressing industry topics, and spark meaningful debate. We are honoured to have Justice Knowles with us this year to share his insights and perspectives on the industry and I am looking forward to hearing him speak."

The Roebuck Lecture, now in its 15th year, is named after Professor Derek Roebuck MCIArb and celebrates the very significant contribution he has made to the Institute over the years, principally as Editor of Arbitration: The International Journal of Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Management.

This lecture takes place each summer and is one of the highlights of Ciarb's events calendar. This event is open to practicing lawyers, arbitrators, mediators, barristers, corporate counsel, business professionals, students with interest in ADR and academics from around the world. Ciarb extends the virtual live viewing of this year’s Roebuck Lecture to the whole ADR community worldwide, complimentary.
