The Course Director, Nasir Khan, is the Head of Contract Solutions at Currie & Brown where he advises clients on procurement, claims, expert witness, dispute avoidance, management and resolution. He utilises his 20 years' experience of delivering large infrastructure projects as an engineer, chartered surveyor, chartered procurement, and being legally qualified he has developed a unique skillset delivering a complex projects portfolio where he has led large and complex claims on quantum, delay and engineering issues spanning various industries including energy, utilities, property, oil & gas, manufacturing, ports, highways and rail infrastructure. Nasir has Fellowship of various institutions, lectures on commercial dispute avoidance and resolution and regularly acts as an expert, mediator, adjudicator and arbitrator. In 2020, Nasir was awarded MBE for his services- to equality, diversity and inclusion.
The course will be delivered face-to-face by Mian Sheraz Javaid FCIArb and virtually by Leonora Riesenburg FCIArb.
Mian Sheraz Javaid is a Construction Barrister, Arbitrator and Mediator, and is a "non-traditional" construction barrister in Pakistan who began his professional career as a civil engineer. Skilled and dynamic leader with 20+ years of demonstrated capacity in all aspects of construction litigation and contract drafting/negotiation, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), Mediation, Adjudication, Neutral Evaluation, Arbitration, licensing, and other construction issues. Mr. Javaid is well equipped to deal with land development-related matters and controversies (especially ones involving technical issues) and to champion client interests before regulatory officials and approval bodies. Mr. Javaid is representing governments, owners, developers, builders, contractors, subcontractors, sureties, and consulting/design professionals.
Mr. Javaid’s core area of expertise is dispute avoidance with special emphasis on the role of Dispute Resolution Advisor (DRA) for commercial entities involved in large to medium scale construction projects both in private and government sector, devising the right procurement method for a construction project along with the appropriate standard form of contract and training & development of the enterprises both public and private sector to equip for dispute avoidance and standard forms.
Mr. Javaid is a ‘Professional Engineer’ certified by Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and was admitted on the ‘Roll of Advocates’ by The Punjab Bar Council, Lahore Pakistan in 2002, Life member of Lahore Bar Council (LBA) since 2004 and has also been a life member of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) since 2006. Mr. Javaid is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Fellow of Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors, Fellow of Prime Dispute and is a member of the Honorable Society of Gray’s Inn as an Unregistered Barrister.
Leonora Riesenburg is an experienced, Independent International Arbitrator and Accredited Commercial Mediator registered on arbitration and mediation panels worldwide including with AIAC, CRCICA, DIAC, DIFC-LCIA, EMAC, ICC, LCIA, SCCA and SIAC. UK qualified as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales, she is also registered as a Part 1 and Part 2 practitioner in the DIFC Courts, and a member of the DIFC Courts Arbitration Working Group.
A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the immediate past Chair of the UAE Branch of the CIArb, an Independent Member of CIArb Board of Management in the UK, Regional Pathway Leader (RPL) in International Arbitration and Commercial Mediation for the CIArb in the MENA Region, Leonora is routinely involved in Education and Training in arbitration and mediation for the CIArb in the UAE and UK.
In addition, she trains and assesses experts in expert report writing and witness testimony for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in the MENA Region and UK. Since relocating to the UAE in 2007, in addition to her honourary roles and prior to setting up her independent practice, Leonora worked in private practice with a top ranking UAE legal firm in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and in-house as the Group Head of Legal of a Dubai headquartered public investment conglomerate. Leonora is proud to be decorated with many prestigious awards, voted ‘Best Female ADR Specialist Middle East’ (Acquisition International 2020 Legal Awards),‘Outstanding Woman of the Year’ amongst the International Arbitrators and Engineering Experts Community in the UAE (2019 IAEE UAE Awards), ‘Most Influential Woman in ADR in the Middle East’ (Acquisition International 2019 Legal Awards), ‘Mediator of the Year in the UAE’ (Acquisition International 2018 Dispute Resolution Awards), and ‘Arbitrator of the Year in the UAE’ (Acquisition International 2017 Dispute Resolution Awards). Whilst in private practice, she was rated by Legal 500 Global in Dispute Resolution, and Banking & Finance.

• The Arbitration process: obligations of the tribunal, responsibilities and obligations of the parties;
• Managing the Arbitration process: communications, preliminary meeting, interlocutory matters, dealing with factual and
opinion evidence and disclosure of documents including introduction to the IBA Guidelines;
• Presenting the claim and the defence: alternative methods;
• Procedure at a typical hearing, including contrasting common and civil law jurisdictions;
• Costs and interest: alternative approaches in different jurisdictions;
• Essentials of an enforceable Award.
