CIArb’s New York Branch is delighted to announce the dates for the second New York Arbitration Week 2020, taking place on 17 - 20 November, following the success of the first New York Arbitration Week in 2019.
As in the inaugural New York Arbitration Week, Arbitration Week 2020 will be a joint initiative of the CIArb New York Branch and the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC). New York Arbitration Week 2020 will showcase New York as a leading global seat for international arbitration and as a source and crossroads for thought leadership in the field. The numerous events throughout the week will bring together once again arbitration advocates, neutrals and academics from New York, the Americas and the broader international community, to share information and insights on the latest developments, to promote professional development, and to provide an opportunity for networking at the start of New York’s most festive season.
Last year’s New York Arbitration Week, a harbinger for the 2020 Week, addressed top-of-mind issues and included an in-depth CIArb program on the newly released Restatement of the US Law of International Commercial and Investor State Arbitration led by Restatement Reporter and CIArb New York Branch Patron Professor George A. Bermann FCIArb. Each of the major arbitral institutions based in, or with a major presence in New York presented panel discussions covering recent legal developments, enforcement issues, industry-specific concerns and trends in legislation and global politics with potential impact on arbitration. The North American launch of the Cybersecurity Protocol took place at NYIAC, the host of a number of the events at their hearing centre. NYIAC also brought together leading Young Member Groups, including CIArb’s YMG, in a breakfast program featuring YMG members addressing diversity and inclusion in practice. The social events including cocktails following the CIArb New York Branch program and a gala dinner at the Yale Club of New York. The annual Fordham Law School Conference on International Arbitration featured global thought leaders including Meg Kinnear, ICSID Secretary General, and keynote speaker Professor Julian D M Lew QC C.Arb FCIArb. All New York Arbitration Week 2019 programs and events were fully subscribed, with registration for some programs closed well in advance of the Week itself.
Information on New York Arbitration Week 2020 will be made available in the coming months on the New York Arbitration Week website and on the CIArb New York Branch website and NYIAC website.

Joint intervention success as Churchill judgment allows the courts to order parties to mediateIn a significant moment for mediation, the highly anticipated Churchill judgment overturns the decision in Halsey, confirming it is not a breach of human rights to integrate mediation into the court process and, where appropriate, to order parties to mediate. CMC, Ciarb and CEDR joined forces to intervene in the case, arguing strongly for this outcome.
