Thursday 6th October marked the return of the North West branch’s annual dinner, held at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Manchester Airport Hotel in Cheshire.
The branch is grateful to everyone who attended the event, including esteemed guests, members of our branch and those kindly supporting our event.
Our top table consisted of our current branch Chair, Nikki Sharp FCIArb;, Matt Drake FCIArb, our previous chair; Jonathan Wood FCIArb, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Institute; Mark Hudson, representing the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors; and His Honour Judge Stephen Davies and His Honour Judge Neil Cadwallader, representing the Business & Property Courts and the Technology & Construction Courts of Manchester and Liverpool respectively along with our guest speaker Alfie Moore.
Our Chair then formally welcomed attendees to the annual dinner with Paul Jensen FCIArb delivering a wonderful Grace and Loyal Toast. Nikki then presented the Chair’s address highlighting the successes that the Branch has made during the first year under her guidance before introducing the Branch’s guest speaker, Alfie Moore.
Alfie is a popular figure on television, radio and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is a former police officer and sergeant turned comedian and his presentation was based on his professional background and the hilarious but often unfortunate tales having the guests in hysterics.
The branch is thankful to Nikki and Matt for organising such a wonderful evening and to the rest of the committee for their hard work in making the event a success.

Joint intervention success as Churchill judgment allows the courts to order parties to mediateIn a significant moment for mediation, the highly anticipated Churchill judgment overturns the decision in Halsey, confirming it is not a breach of human rights to integrate mediation into the court process and, where appropriate, to order parties to mediate. CMC, Ciarb and CEDR joined forces to intervene in the case, arguing strongly for this outcome.
