CIArb's East Anglia Branch, Year in Review

This year’s achievements for the East Anglia Branch have been underpinned by the Young Member Group (YMG) Webinar Series. This was organised in lieu of 2nd Annual YMG Conference, which was to be held face-to-face in Manila, Philippines.

The Webinar series was titled “International ADR in Asia: Global Challenges and Opportunities to Young Practitioners in the “New Normal Era”. The series consisted of 8 webinars which ran over 4 weeks during November 2020.The organising committee comprised YMG members from 8 different jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, India and Taiwan. In total there were over 40 young ADR practitioners as panellists from across the globe. The webinars were exceedingly popular with some webinars receiving over 300 registrants. There were a total of approximately 650 attendees from various regions across the globe.

Joint intervention success as Churchill judgment allows the courts to order parties to mediate

In a significant moment for mediation, the highly anticipated Churchill judgment overturns the decision in Halsey, confirming it is not a breach of human rights to integrate mediation into the court process and, where appropriate, to order parties to mediate. CMC, Ciarb and CEDR joined forces to intervene in the case, arguing strongly for this outcome.
