We are pleased to announce that Professor Emilia Onyema FCIArb has been awarded by the African Arbitration Association (AfAA) in the prestigious Africa's 30 Arbitration Powerlist 2020 Award.
The award by the African Arbitration Association is formally known as the "Mentor of the Year" award. The AfAA Awards seeks to highlight the achievements of African jurisdictions, arbitration / ADR practitioners and Institutions and their significant contributions to the development of arbitration / ADR in Africa thus driving the effort to make Africa a preferred destination for business and arbitration / ADR activities. The criteria applied by AfAA is: This is awarded to an individual who has helped inspire young African practitioners in arbitration/ADR to fulfil their true potential, achieve excellence in their career and launch their careers as practising arbitration/ADR practitioners. The winner shows a proven track record of helping young practitioners rise in their careers. This category applies to those working in any capacity in law firms, arbitration/ADR institutions or independent practitioners. Emilia won this prestige award with Mr Kamal Shah.
Emilia Onyema FCIArb is a Professor of International Commercial Law at SOAS University of London where she teaches international commercial arbitration and international investment law. She is qualified to practice law in Nigeria, is a Solicitor in England & Wales, Fellow of CIArb and independent arbitrator. She convenes the SOAS Arbitration in Africa conference series and leads the SOAS Arbitration in Africa biennial survey research project. Her research interests focus on the development of international arbitration in Africa and the engagement of Africans in international arbitration. She has experience as presiding, co and sole arbitrator in international commercial arbitration.
