This is an online event hosted byCIArb’s West Midlands Branch, entitled ‘Singapore Mediation Convention and its Relevance to the United Kingdom’ taking place on 24 April 2021 at 6.00pm BST.
The global rise of mediation and the implementation of the Singapore Mediation Convention is set to revolutionise the use of mediation in the international setting. Robert Rhodes QC, FCIArb and James Ng MCIArb will introduce the key elements of the UN Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation (known as the Singapore Convention on Mediation) and will discuss its relevance to the UK even though the UK have yet to sign up to the Convention. There will be an opportunity for delegates to ask the speakers questions on their experience and thoughts regarding the current and future impact of the convention in the UK and international setting during the event.

Robert Rhodes QC FCIArb specialises in business crime, international mediation and international arbitration (both as counsel and mediator / arbitrator), financial services, regulatory and disciplinary law. Robert is a panel member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Pandemic Business Dispute Resolution Service.
He is Adjunct Professor of the Academy of International Dispute Resolution & Professional Negotiation.
Robert is a Mediator at the international Court of Arbitration for Sport, Switzerland. He is a member of the Arbitration and Mediation Panels of the Court of Arbitration for Art, Rotterdam. Robert is also appointed to the Panel of Mediators of the International Commercial Mediation Center for the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing.
He has been appointed a Senior International Mediation Expert at the Mainland-Hong Kong Joint Mediation Center, Hong Kong. He is an Invited Expert on the Professional Committee on Investment Arbitration of the China Academy of Arbitration Law. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the London Court of International Arbitration and of the International Chamber of Commerce, a former member of the Corporate Panel of the Dispute Board Federation, and has been recommended as a Leading Silk in Fraud, Banking and Finance by the Legal 500. He has spoken in various continents on international mediation, international arbitration, fraud, bribery, and money laundering. He has published extensively on those subjects, and has been interviewed by the media.
He has revalidated BPP University’s International Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Law modules for its LLM. He is a Master of the Bench of the Inner Temple, and a Member of the Bar Council of England & Wales.
James Ng FCIArb is a CEDR Accredited Mediator (since 2008) and a Mediator of CCPIT, People's Republic of China (since 2009). Currently, he is practising as Head of Commercial Litigation, Birmingham Office at mfg Solicitors LLP in the city of Birmingham, England. He is a Committee Member of the CIArb's West Midlands Branch.
He has more than 20 years’ experience in all forms of dispute resolution mechanisms including Court proceedings, International Arbitration and Mediation. James has spoken on these topics at conferences in the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong).
James is fully conversant in English, Mandarin (and two other major Chinese languages, Cantonese and Hokkien), Malay and Indonesian languages. His main working language is English.
