The reception will start at 6.00pm and will end at approximately 8.00pm.
The South East Branch is pleased to have the University of Law, one of the leading U.K. providers of legal education, as their partner in developing a new student essay competition specifically for those with an interest in dispute resolution. The objective is to create the premier competition of its type in the UK. We anticipate that participation in this competition will become an important step on the path to a career in dispute resolution. To achieve this, we need the help of those who are involved in the education and training of those students.

CIArb South East Branch Essay Writing Competition

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (“CIArb”) with over 16,000 members and 38 branches worldwide, is committed to the promotion and development of arbitration and other methods of dispute resolution as alternatives to litigation (“ADR”). The South-East branch covers Surrey, Kent and Sussex.

Our objective is to create the premier competition of its type in the UK. We anticipate that participation in this competition will become an important step on the path to a career in dispute resolution. To achieve this, we need the help of those who are involved in the education and training of those students. We need you to carry the message back to academics and students and encourage them to become involved.
We are delighted that Lord Neuberger, the Chancellor of the University of Law and immediate past president of the UK Supreme Court has agreed to head the panel of leading judicial, academic and arbitral specialists judging the competition which also comprises Sir Robert Akenhead, former head of the Technology and Construction Court as well as Rosemary Jackson QC, Professor Stavros Brekoulakis of Queen Mary University London and Geoffrey Beresford-Hartwell EUR ING.
The subject of the essays is any aspect of ADR to include arbitration, adjudication and mediation. It is open to all undergraduates, graduates and those undertaking professional training not just in law, but in any subject which covers ADR as part of its program. The winner, to be selected from 6 finalists, will be announced at an Awards Evening in December. That person will receive a prize of £2,500 and the unique opportunity to learn more about ADR with a one-month internship at leading law firm Stevens & Bolton LLP. The winning essay will be published in the quarterly CIArb “Journal of Arbitration” which is sent to over 16,000 members and arbitral practitioners worldwide. The runner-up will receive £1,250 and the third place winner, £750.
All participants will be eligible for free student membership of CIArb.
