CIETAC Cup, organised by China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), is an annual professional competition of arbitration. Since its foundation in 2000, CIETAC Cup had been successfully held 17 times, which attracted over 4,000 students from more than 200 renowned law faculties and universities.
CIETAC is hosting the 18th CIETAC Cup on 15 - 20 November 2020.
CIETAC Cup is a significant platform for improving students’ legal accomplishments, developing international arbitration, and promoting cooperation and exchange among international arbitration communities. With the goal of cultivating the young generation of world’s international arbitration professionals, CIETAC Cup adopts the same case problem as the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (“Vis Moot”). CIETAC Cup is the qualification trials of Vis Moot in Chinese Mainland, and the first registered pre-moot of its kind for the Vis Moot worldwide. The champion and the runner-up of CIETAC CUP will be sponsored by CIETAC to participate in Vis Moot held in Vienna and Vis East Moot held in Hong Kong respectively.
In recent years, in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, the demand for international legal service talents increased dramatically. In the context of the expanding the scale of enterprises going global, CIETAC is committed to cultivating international legal talents and serving the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. CIETAC Cup is of great help to improve the legal practice ability of arbitration of the law school students, to improve the teaching ability of international commercial arbitration and the development of arbitration law courses in colleges and universities, and to develop and reserve talents for China’s arbitration law. At present, CIETAC Cup has become the first brand of China’s arbitration competition, and its international influence is expanding.

Statistics show that in many jurisdictions, female law students exceed 50%. Yet the number of females who make it to partnership in international law firms drops to 20%. Worse, the figure of female partners in international arbitration practices globally can be as low as 1 out of 10. While the number of females appointed as arbitrators is on the rise, some Asian arbitral institutions are appointing only 10% females or less.
This has prompted the arbitration community to launch a number of initiatives, most notably the Equal Representation in Arbitration (ERA) Pledge in 2015. The ERA Pledge calls for a commitment to increase the number of female arbitrators on an equal opportunity basis, with the ultimate goal of full gender parity.
ArbitralWomen and the Thailand Arbitration Center are joining forces for the first time to address the crucial issue of gender equality in international arbitration.
