YMG Kenya Visit to the University of Nairobi

10 Apr 2018

YMG Kenya were honoured to pay a visit to the University of Nairobi School of Law; the oldest university in Kenya.

L-R Francis Kariuki, Mercy Okiro, Samuel Nderitu, James Ngotho and Wilfred Mutubwa

Mr. Wilfred Mutubwa, FCIArb (member of YMG Steering Committee) covered the main types of ADR and shared the journey he has undertaken towards becoming a Fellow of the Institute.

The YMG Vice Chairperson Mr. James Ngotho, MCIArb, enlightened the students on the opportunities available in ADR; both currently, as well as in their future endeavours. He also guided them through the various CIArb training pathways under the Golden Thread.

The Vice Chairperson of the CIArb Kenya Mr. Samuel Nderitu, FCIArb spoke in depth about how to set up a career in ADR and discussed investment treaty arbitration, a fairly new area for ADR practitioners in Africa.

Mr. Francis Kariuki, MCIArb, discussed Mediation training in Kenya, Court Annexed Mediation, and Traditional Dispute Resolution Mechanisms. He also encouraged students to get more involved in CIArb activities and submit more articles on ADR.

The Kenya YMG Chairperson Mercy Okiro, MCIArb, discussed the Young Members Group and benefits of CIArb Student Membership. She shared her own journey in ADR and encouraged the students to consider ADR alongside their law degrees. Finally, she informed students that Kenya YMG would be launching a local student membership scheme to ensure more participation of Kenyan students in the local YMG.

The question and answer session was superb as the students had prepared a myriad of questions in advance which were answered excellently by the panel.

We wish to thank the former Chairperson of CIArb Kenya Dr. Kariuki Muigua who assisted us in planning the event as well as the Branch Committee and Secretariat for their support.
